To begin, product development refers to the process of planning, designing, and bringing to market new products. In short, product development is the process of developing a new product from its initial concept.

Application development, on the other hand, refers to the process of designing and developing software applications for commercial purposes. Application developers create computer programs for businesses and individuals to use in their daily lives by creating websites or software applications.

So, product development is more broad. Product development means developing a new product from its initial concept. There are four stages of product development:

  • idea generation,
  • idea evaluation,
  • concept testing, and
  • commercialization.

Then, application development is more narrow and specific. It means designing and developing software applications for commercial purposes. There are five stages of application development:

  • requirements analysis and specification,
  • design,
  • construction and testing,
  • installation and maintenance,
  • upgrades and future development

Moreover, product development is a long-term commitment. The best products are those that are developed with a long-term view in mind. The idea generation stage can take up to six months or even longer. The idea evaluation stage can take 16 weeks or longer if the company is looking at a complex idea. One that requires a lot of analysis to determine its market potential.

The commercialization stage can take at least three months if the company wants to get a complex product into the marketplace with a minimum of marketing efforts needed to sell it successfully.

Then, there is no set amount of time for application development. Because it depends on the complexity of the software that needs to be developed.
