Product Development

Product Development

Do you know what product development is? Do you know why this is important to do these days? If you want to know why then read on.

Product Development

Product development refers to the process of taking a new product from the drawing board to the marketplace. It includes all the different steps that go into making a new product, starting with the initial idea and ending with the finished product.

Product development is an umbrella term used to describe all of the activities that take place in bringing a new product to market. It is also referred to as “product engineering,” “project management” or “product lifecycle management.” All of these terms refer to how a product moves from inception through production and distribution to the ultimate consumer.

Then, the main goal of product development is to create a successful, marketable product. The process involves developing ideas, researching and testing concepts, designing prototypes, and getting funding for manufacturing. If a company wants to develop its products, it will typically have its internal staff who handle this process. But larger companies that outsource most of their design tasks may use outside vendors for this work.

Further, the team that handles product development can vary in size depending on the nature of the project. For example, if a company has done all of its research on the product and has only one or two remaining tasks before manufacturing, then it might only need two or three people on its team.

On the other hand, if it has only a vague concept of what it wants to produce and needs several rounds of testing with different prototypes made by an outside vendor while also working with designers and marketers, then it will most likely need a much bigger team with many more specialists involved.

Product Development Members?

Many different people can be involved in bringing a new product idea to life. A few key players include:

  • In-house design team. This group typically includes members from a variety of departments such as engineering, marketing, and sales. They are those who are familiar with other products in the company’s line. And can come up with concepts for something new.
  • Outside designers. Many companies contract out much or most of their design work to outside companies that specialize in design services. Oftentimes, these firms have teams dedicated to coming up with designs for specific industries. Such as electronic equipment or home appliances. This can be more cost-effective than hiring full-time employees within a company for this type of work. Especially if there is high turnover in this position due to job dissatisfaction or low pay.
  • Manager. A manager must oversee the entire product development process. He or she is charged with keeping the project on schedule and within budget. For a small company, this can be one person. But even large companies with multiple product lines may have a dedicated product manager. One who oversees all of the new product development within an industry.
