In supply chain management, product development is a process that involves the entire supply chain team. The process can be done in two ways, which are:

  • Building a new product or adding new features to the existing product.
  • Improving the existing product or service.

The first process is called new product development, and the second one is called product improvement. Also, it is when you build a new product or add new features to an existing one to offer a better customer experience.

 There are three different stages in this, which are:

1) Idea Generation. It’s where you gather your creative ideas on how to create a better product or service. You can gather your idea from existing products on the market or by coming up with original ideas and concepts.

2) Concept Development. In this stage, you will find out the options that meet your expectations and how you can create that option into a real product. You will also collect all the details of your concepts here.

3) Launch and Launch Follow-Up. This stage is where you gain feedback from your customers to improve your products based on what they want or need.

Who Should Be Involved In New Product Development in Supply Chain Management?

There are four different kinds of people that should be involved in new product development in supply chain management, which are:

1) CEO. The CEO has to be involved in this whole process because he/she decides whether to invest in a new project or not. And if it does then he/she will determine the budget for this project. Then, the CEO also assigns all the tasks and jobs to different people involved in this process. Like developing a creative idea, creating a concept, testing the concept with customers, and judging whether the results are good enough for launching the concept into reality.

2) Marketing Manager. Marketing managers have different job roles in this process. They are the ones who are responsible for generating creative ideas and concepts. He/she also works on making the product stand out from the competitors.

3) The Development Team. The development team is made up of all the people involved in creating a new product or adding new features to an existing product. The team is also responsible for creating detailed plans and procedures on how to create and test a concept, as well as how to implement it into reality.

4) The Quality Assurance Team. This team is responsible for making sure that the overall product and service are of high quality. They do this by inspecting all the different details that go into creating a new product or adding new features to an existing one.

Conclusion

As you can see, it is a big process to create a new product or add new features to an existing one. You have to involve all the people from the supply chain team in this process. This is how you do product development in supply chain management.
