How to Develop a Career in R&D?

Develop a love for science

Develop a love for science! It’s one of the most important things you can do. It’s something that will carry you through your entire career. 

Ask questions of your teachers and professors, read a lot, go to special lectures and workshops, volunteer to help scientists in their labs, and take every science course you can!

If you love science, you will be able to keep working on it for a long time. Look at your favorite authors or people in science that have inspired you.

Make good grades

Make good grades in school! You don’t have to be a straight-A student, but don’t fail any classes either. 

Make sure you get a good grade in all the required science classes, especially chemistry and biology. It’s always helpful to take as many AP or Honors classes as possible. 

You may even want to consider taking some business or finance classes. Doing well in school shows employers that you are a hard worker who is motivated to achieve success. 

It also helps show that you can work well with others because it is likely that you had to work with many other students while taking the required science classes.

Get involved with research

Get involved with research! You can do this as early as high school by volunteering at a university lab or working for university faculty members who are conducting research projects. 

This will give you experience working with people, solving problems, and developing new ideas that could lead to new ways of doing things. 

It will also help you learn how scientific experiments are conducted. So when you get into college, you will be familiar with the process of doing experiments and analyzing data from those experiments.

A Ph.D. or equivalent degree shows that you have the ability to conduct research, develop new ideas, and work independently without supervision. 

Pursuing a Ph.D. also allows you to specialize in an area of science or engineering that is of interest to you and that you enjoy working with. 

It also helps show that you are motivated and willing to stay in school for many more years in order to get the additional education needed to pursue a career in R&D. 

When looking for jobs, don’t limit yourself to companies that say they only hire people with Ph.D.’s or equivalent degrees! There are many other companies out there that will hire people with bachelor’s degrees too, especially if they have relevant work experience.
